Senior Hurling Championship Round 3
Kilburn Gaels 1-13 Sean Treacys 0-11
Kilburn Gaels once again outlined their credentials as Senior Hurling Championship winners elect, but only after with standing a thorough examination by a resilient Sean Treacys side at Ruislip on Sunday
Despite a spirited performance, ultimately Sean Treacys lacked the necessary fire power up front to truly suggest that they could have snatched this one, but they pushed the Gaels all the way to the end, never allowing them the luxury of being able to coast to the line.
Sean Treacys' Neil Murphy and the Gaels' Hubert Kelly traded scores inside the opening minute, but Kilburn were guilty of being wasteful in front of goal, as they racked up a succession of wides. Paul Fagan (twice), Michael Hayes (twice) and Keith Kennedy (twice) were all guilty of squandering opportunities, though the gusty wind swirling around Ruislip was hardly helping the scoring rate.
Sean Treacys broke the deadlock, after a 13 minute stalemate, when Sean Keogh fired over a free, but Michael Hayes replied for Kilburn to restore parity. The Gaels edged deservedly ahead through a free from Fagan, but a combination of poor finishing from Kilburn and a spirited Sean Treacys display, ensured that there was little in it on the board.
John Walsh sent over two wides, before finding Hayes with an exquisite ball, which Hayes despatched beyond Ned Keane and into the back of the Sean Treacys net. But Sean Treacys were nothing if not fired up for this clash, and Michael Carroll pulled one back from a tight angle, as a physical first-half came to a close.
When Murphy added another, the gap was down to just three points, but as the half lapsed into injury time Kilburn grabbed two late crucial scores through Kennedy and a Fagan ‘65' to widen the margin to a five point gap that ultimately, as hard as Sean Treacys battled, they were never able to close.
